The colour options won't be for everyone

Perhaps one of the coolest, stylish and eye-catching bags currently on the market, the Ogio All Elements Hybrid Stand Bag combines exceptional looks with performance. Ogio have broken the mold in terms of their fresh and funky designs and we salute them for their innovative styles, which are perfect for any golfer looking to make a statement on the course. Yet, there's a lot more to this bag than the fancy patterns printed on its waterproof lining. Yes, it is fully waterproof, along with its seam sealed zips, that will keep all your belongings stored in the bag's nine roomy pockets dry and secure.

If you're the type of player who likes to have all your clubs neatly organised, but doesn't want to carry around a tour bag, then the eight-way divider on the top of this bag, which features a separate section for four big clubs, is the perfect way to keep your sticks all organised and dent free. That in turn makes it very easy to pull out your next club without drawing with it, your five iron, pitching wedge, and 52º. One other cool thing about this bag is that it houses a ball silo on the back, which, while seeming slightly gimmicky, was so handy to house a full packet of the best premium golf balls (opens in new tab)

Not fully waterproof

The thing we really like about the Cobra Ultralight Stand Bag is the fact you can really pack it up if you need to take a lot of equipment out with you. There are eight pockets to keep your gear well organized and separated and the oversize apparel pocket is spacious enough to fit full waterproofs plus an extra layer if required.

Clubs are well protected by the five-way top and full length dividers while the nicely designed top grab handle makes it easy to swing in and out of a car boot. The quick release shoulder strap together with Cool flow hip pad make for comfortable carrying while the Easyflex base is excellent for stability on rough ground when the stand is in use.

It’s pretty lightweight at just over 2kg and it looks funky in six striking color options. Overall, it ticks a lot of boxes.

Lightness means it’s inevitably less robust than some stand bags

The Hoofer has become an iconic moniker within the stand bag market. The new Ping Hoofer stand bag comes with a whopping 22 litres of volume from its 11 pockets. From these 11 pockets, a velour lined valuables pocket, a magnetic rangefinder pocket and a top-access magnetic slip pocket are the most useful and feel well made.

The new back puck simplifies conversion to a single strap and the large apparel pockets come with a full-length zip for easy access. The cart strap channel makes it easy to put this bag onto a trolley and means all 11 pockets are still fully accessible with the carry strap still on the bag.

It is definitely one of the more classic looking bags in our list and we think it looks best in neutral colors, meaning all of your headcovers, towels and other accessories will match nicely with this bag when it is being used. It is such a favorite of ours that we also included it in our best Ping golf bags (opens in new tab) guides.

Colors: 3

Reasons to buy

+
Excellent waterproofing qualities
+
Sleek, lightweight and stylish

Reasons to avoid

-
Needs another pocket for tees, pencils etc

The excellent Fairway C Hyper Dry delivers on a number of levels. It really is incredibly lightweight at just 1.8kg, it’s waterproof and it looks great in three different color options. We tested the royal blue/camo model and it really looked smart out on the fairways.

We found this bag to be super comfy to carry, not only because it weighs so little but also because of the excellent padded strap. The straps are self-adjusting, so it sits nicely on your back and stays put throughout the round. The hip pad is slightly smaller than other models on this list but we felt this was only a minor complaint.

It’s sleek and easy to lift and it’s nice and compact for fitting in a car or locker. It has excellent waterproofing qualities thanks to the fabric, sealed seams and welded zips.

An all-rounder when it comes to balancing features while offering a comfortable and easy ride, the BR-D3 stand bag is a great option for any avid golfer. The bag itself is also a great value option for anyone not looking to spend a pretty penny on a new golf bag. That does mean it has a slightly stripped-back design, it does come with eight pockets and compartments that give players enough space and storage to keep their clubs and equipment tucked away nicely. While the bag is not fully waterproof itself, it does come with a waterproof valuables pocket that will shelter your most precious belongings from the elements.

Carrying the bag is a pleasure too, as it is one of the best lightweight golf bags (opens in new tab) around coming in at just 2kg. Its well-padded strap also helps to cushion your shoulders and disperse the weight of the bag around your back. While the lack of waterproofing may be a slight issue for some golfers, it doesn't take away from the functionality and practical benefits this bag can offer you around the course.

Not ideal for golfers who mostly ride or use push carts

With its sleek design and expert craftsmanship, the Vessel VLS might be the most comfortable carry bag on the market for golfers that enjoy walking the fairways instead of riding in a cart. The "EQZ" strap system works flawlessly, gives with the body as you cross over different terrains, and seems effortless to carry. The fact that it's only 4.2 lbs empty also helps, but it's also about the sleekness of this bag and how it fits on the body.

It has six good pockets, a solid stand but we should also acknowledge that it is just water resistant and not totally waterproof so if this is a big factor for you, scroll down to our best waterproof options.

Less storage than others in its category

Stylish and packed with useful features, this waterproof stand bag from Inesis earned a spot in our Editor's Choice awards in 2022 (opens in new tab). Providing incredible value for money, it is also available for a fraction of the price you might pay for a similar product made by a more well-known brand. Made from a Polyethylene Terephtalate material, this bag is one of the most lightweight stand bags (opens in new tab) on the market and comes with 14 individual dividers for your clubs. That means it's great for players who like to stay organized.

It takes no time either to adjust the supportive straps to your desired length and they will stay firmly in position as you walk around the course. Reasons to avoid

Straps are difficult to adjust

Another top-notch lightweight model is the Big Max Feather model, which, as the name suggests, is as light as a feather at just 1.4kg. Not only that but we thought it looked good and offered a degree of simplicity with the five-way divider. The stand is solid and does what it's supposed to. It’s easy to deploy on grounding and the legs don’t droop down while walking, which is a major pet peeve of ours. Admittedly the strap can be difficult to adjust but this is a minor complaint really, whereas the storage and pockets available really make this a good bag to consider. The integrated cooler pocket in particular was a nice touch.

There's also a cushioned hip pad, a roomy four-way top, and seven pockets offering storage options for essentials and extras. It has an auto-deploy stand and full contact base for secure placement, umbrella loop holder, towel and glove attachment points. The new design also includes a cart-strap channel.

Fully waterproof

Versatile to carry or use on a trolley

Reasons to avoid

-
Larger overall footprint than other bags

The HydroFlex is a versatile, waterproof, super lightweight carry bag designed to fit on any Motocaddy trolley thanks to the pioneering Easilock compatibility. This is great if you have a Motocaddy trolley but even if you don’t, the bag fits nicely on most trolleys and comes with an easily removable strap.

We think the bag looks even better than the 2020 version thanks to a style update for 2021. The brilliant waterproof technology carries over from last year, giving all the gear in your bag excellent protection from the elements thanks to the waterproof TPU-coated nylon fabric and welded seams.

The HydroFlex features include a quick release strap, full-length dividers and five spacious and easily accessible pockets. A moulded hip pad provides ultimate comfort when carrying your clubs around the course and we found this incredibly comfortable despite the relatively large footprint of the bag.

It is available in three colors but easily the best part of this bag is the versatility. It's lightweight enough that you can comfortably carry a half-set one day but also big enough that you can fill it up with clubs, clothing, water bottles and food and use it on a trolley the next day. One bag that does every job.

Its 14-way divider and five spacious water-repellent pockets give it superb cart bag capacity, while it's also ultra lightweight at just 2kg and comes with practical features such as the air channel for breathability, which means it excels as a stand bag too.

As with most Big Max products it comes with a great warranty directly from the manufacturer, so even though this bag feels well made and robust, there is peace of mind there too.

The Strap Slider System allows the bag to stay stable while carrying and adjusts itself as you move. Meanwhile, the FlexTech stand system is easy to use and means the bag is easy to access while walking.

This is another bag that works as good on a trolley thanks to the way the base is made, the easily removable strap and the 14-way divider. While the 14-way divider might be too big for those who carry often, it means there is never any club crowding in the bag.

Ten pockets include a suede lined valuables pocket, two large apparel pockets and a large insulated cooler pocket meaning there is plenty of space to store all the essentials and more.

Lacks a zipless pocket/pouch

Wilson recently added to its range of stand bags with the Exo Dry, which tested rather well for us. It features a 5-way top with two full-length dividers. At 2.8 kgs, it’s lightweight, and picking it up is easy with three moulded handles. The six pockets include one full-length garment pocket, one for valuables, one for balls, two large ones for accessories, and another large one for a rangefinder or drink.

The waterproofing is very good thanks to sealed seams and zips, and we also liked the large snap-on rain hood which was quick and easy to attach. The stand was also a big plus for us, because the legs deploy farther out for greater stability, whilst the manufacturer’s 2-in-1 self-balancing strap technology improves fit and comfort.

How we test the best golf stand bags

When it comes to our process of testing golf stand bags (opens in new tab), we take it very seriously. Whether we are sent a product or buy it ourselves, we put each bag to the test out on the golf course to ensure we can provide thorough and reliable advice. Most importantly though, manufacturers cannot pay for a good review because we tell it how we see it. Every member of the Golf Monthly team is an avid golfer and as such, knows what does and doesn't make for a good stand bag.

As far as our methodology goes, if we say we have reviewed a product, that means we have done so properly. We also endeavor to use all the features on the golf bag. That means, for example, if the valuables pocket claims to be waterproof, we will pour water on it to find out.

Specifically to stand bags, we put the stand itself to the test on different lies, angles and ground conditions because there is nothing more annoying than a stand bag with a poor stand. This comprehensive testing style is not just exclusive to golf bags either, we test using the same ethos and methodology across all gear categories.

What to consider when buying a stand bag?

So what are some of the factors to consider when you are purchasing a stand bag? Well below we have listed some that we think are the most important and most of the bags above will satisfy all our criteria.

Weight

If it is going to be on your back and shoulders during the round, then it has to be light and it is important to realize that some models are lighter than others. That being said if you want heavier models or ones you can use on carts too, there are models designed for that.

Comfort

On that same kind of note, comfort is also vitally important. It has to fit properly on your body whilst also having comfortable straps. Some also have padded areas around the hips and back as well which helps.

Strength

Whilst a good stand bag will be light and comfortable, it should also be strong whether it be the core bag section, the strap, or the stand itself. Preferably the sturdier the better because it has to protect your golf clubs properly.

Storage

If storage for all your gear is important, then some bags have more, and larger, pockets. The top models will have specifically designed pockets for your apparel, balls, accessories, perhaps a beverage pocket and definitely one to house valuables.

Waterproof

If you see yourself playing in the rain a lot then waterproofing will be a factor to consider. Some models above are better than others in this regard because they have been designed as such.

Looks

Importantly many brands have started to realize that we want our golf bags to look good as well as be functional. As such there are loads of unique designs and colors to choose from so it is a case of finding something you like the look of.

Budget

The final factor to consider is of course price. When choosing a golf bag you have to be aware of what you can afford because there are good models at every single price point. If you want to spend more, or less, then there is a bag for everyone.

FAQs

How do I choose a golf bag?

Well the first thing is to decide if you want a stand or cart bag. If you want the former, then check out the factors and models above to narrow down your choice. If you want a cart bag then check out our best golf trolley bags guide in which we give lots of information on which models are best, factors you should look out for and lots of other advice.

What is a stand bag?

A stand bag is a very convenient way of transporting your golf clubs because they sit on your shoulders and are therefore lightweight and comfortable. Importantly, as the name suggests, the bags have two built-in legs that allow them to sit at an angle when you're taking your shot. This makes it easy for you to pick your next club, and stops the bag getting wet and muddy on the ground on those bad weather days on the golf course.

Can stand bags be used on golf carts?

Yes, more and more brands are starting to design stand bags that can easily be used on golf carts. Some come with specifically designed lock systems on the base of the bag and some have specific straps so you can securely put the bag on your cart.

Why don't professionals use stand bags?

Well we have seen some professionals occasionally put stand bags into play but this is rare because the top players in the world need as much storage as possible for their golf gear. This means tour bags are what we usually see on our televisions because they can house lots of clubs, apparel, golf balls, gloves, food, drinks and all the other golfing paraphernalia professionals need to carry.
