Shoe upper could have more padding

Bolder in terms of aesthetics than you will find elsewhere in the range, the FootJoy Fuel golf shoe aims to combine those modern, athletic looks with the high-level golf-specific performance you’d expect from one of the best golf shoes (opens in new tab) of 2022. The synthetic upper might not have the refined look of the premium leather alternatives like the Premiere Series (opens in new tab) but the benefit is how hard wearing it is. We tested the white, blue and grey colorway and thought it was an incredibly versatile option that could be worn with trousers and shorts, in all seasons and all conditions.

Upper could have more cushioning for added comfort

The fourth generation of this iconic shoe sees some of the comfort we loved from the FootJoy Stratos golf shoe (opens in new tab) and the brand’s Hyperflex (opens in new tab) design added to the midsole of the new 2022 Pro SL. This provides comfort whilst also returning energy to your feet as you step. In addition, the upper of the new version has been cleaned up and, as you can see from the pictures of the sample we tested, the color has been simplified.

As for the on-course performance, this continues to deliver. The comfort straight out of the box is superb and the sole design is among the best spikeless golf shoes (opens in new tab) we have worn on the course. It provides all the traction you need, even in wet, wintery conditions.

Not the softest underfoot

A model that could be the best-looking golf shoe in the game, the Flint is part of FootJoy's Premiere Series of shoes which has been "influenced by the discerning taste of the modern golfer." The distinctly modern classic styling has been achieved by exquisite detailing from the FootJoy designers and yet whilst you may find it hard to find something more stylish, there is also modern performance on offer here.

An Ortholite EcoPlush Fitbed delivers stability and comfort, and despite not being the softest-feeling shoes in the current FootJoy range, they are still very comfortable. While the sheepskin leather upper is soft-feeling, durable and waterproof, the grip on offer from the VersaTrax+ outsole was pretty good and very green friendly. It is available in three different color, and it is also one of the best golf shoes for wide feet (opens in new tab) too because there are four, yes four, width options. This modern take on a classic has made waves since its release, and it’s easy to see why.

Minimal differences to the original Pro SL

The latest iteration of the Pro SL franchise sees an all-new upper material used for the first time, giving the shoe the sportier, more athletic look the name suggests. The shoes are much more lightweight and breathable than the 'standard' Pro SL thanks to the performance material upper, utilizing mesh and using an ultra-thin TPU hotmelt top layer. For our money, these look fantastic too.

It's worth noting that the loss of the all-leather upper from the standard version does not correlate a loss in breathability (opens in new tab) and waterproofness. We tested these on a couple of very warm days on the golf course and found our feet to remain at a comfortable temperature for the entirety of both rounds. We would go as far to say that the Pro SL sport is probably more breathable than the standard version, such is the brilliance of the new upper.

Design is not as exciting as other, more sporty models

The strapline for the FootJoy Stratos 2022 shoe boasts of offering the golfer ‘luxurious comfort’. This is in no small part down to the use of Pittards NappaLuxe leather for the upper and the brand’s StratoFoam under the foot.

When you first pick up the shoe, the first thing you will notice is the styling, which is designed to offer a classic look. There are no flashes of bold color or overly aggressive spikeless designs here, it is all very simple and understated. What's more, despite being spikeless, it offers ample grip, with the sole offering lots of contact points with the ground.

Another stunning-looking shoe, the Packard features premium detailing like the pebble grain leather as well as the calfskin croc print in the saddle area. The natural leather and contrast stitching further elevates the design. Additionally, FootJoy has combined the VersaTrax+ outsole with Pulsar Low Profile Cleats to give outstanding grip (opens in new tab) and traction when needed.

Not the ideal shoe for muddy conditions

The Flex franchise from FootJoy has become an appealing option for many golfers over the last few years. The idea behind the original version was to offer golfers trainer-like comfort and good on course traction, all at an attractive price point. The 2022 version continues that ethos but with some important upgrades.

Firstly, there is the styling, the most eye-catching aspect of which is the waterproof mesh upper. We were pleased to see the Flex XP 2022 comes with a one year waterproof warranty. Indeed, it did a good job of keeping the water out during my testing. However, the mesh upper developed a muddy look that was harder (but not impossible) to clean than, for instance, the FootJoy Pro SL 2022. Secondly, the VersaTrax outsole provided good stability on the course. We had no issues slipping during the swing. What’s more, the stability you get comes from an outsole design that isn’t too aggressive. For us, this makes it one of the best spikeless golf shoes when it comes to course/off course design.

Some may want a softer feel underfoot

FJ has incorporated the Stratofoam that first appeared in the FJ Stratos shoe in the midsole of the new Pro SL Carbon. This provides a hint of softness underfoot but crucially, a subtle spring in your step as you walk. This isn’t going to be the most comfortable golf shoe among FJ's expansive range.  With the carbon fibre inlay that runs the length of the shoe, the overall feel remains firm to help with stability but the padded ankle collar really helps cushion every stride.

You’re easily able to forge a strong connection with the ground in these shoes, which allows you to really go after every shot with full commitment. At no point did these shoes slip or slide - if you hit a bad shot, you’ve only got yourself to blame, not the shoes. The look is near faultless, too. The front half of the shoe is clean so when you’re addressing the ball there are no distractions but then moving backwards, there are some design features that provide a modern, sleek look.

The Tarlow collection comes in two colors (also customizable) and is inspired by Bill and Dick Tarlow, who bought the FootJoy business in 1957 and focused the brand primarily on golf. It is FootJoy's modern interpretation of the timeless cap toe design, made with a natural grain leather in the vamp (the middle part of the upper above the foot) and the quarter (the back part of the upper), complemented by a coordinated croc print in the heel, cap toe and eyestay (lace area).

It is not just about looks though as the cleated sole gives ample grip in lots of conditions, the leather provides waterproofing, and comfort comes from the soft, supple sheepskin linings. Worn by Tiger Woods, Justin Thomas, Max Homa and Billy Horschel, this shoe is very comfortable thanks to its supple sheepskin linings and it didn't rub against our heels or cause any blisters.

Likely to be too substantial for the casual golfer

If you're looking for comfort and stability in your golf shoes, then you should definitely consider trying out the FootJoy Tour Alpha Shoe. This shoe is packed to the brim with golfing technology and while it may look slightly big, they are surprisingly light. The padding around the ankle and underfoot is excellent, while the fit aids to help you feel fully locked into the shoe, which feels almost like an extension of your foot, giving you greater control with your golf swing.

This shoe stands out as one of our best golf shoes in 2022 (opens in new tab) because it is a strong, grippy trainer that gives your more confidence, control and greater power in your golf shots. A lot of that is driven through the nine cleats that are spread out on the bottom of the shoe. That enhanced grip helps you to form a great connection between your feet and the ground, providing greater control over your golf shots even on wetter or muddier terrain.

This means you can wear these shoes all day without experiencing any fatigue.

Look of the Double BOA system may be off putting

Perhaps one of the most innovative golf shoes on this list, the Tour Alpha BOA has many of the same features as the standard laced version of the Tour Alpha (opens in new tab) but comes with a new Wrapid 2.0 fit that features two BOA dials on the heel and side of the shoe. They are designed to help golfers lock their feet in more comfortable while reducing the pressure on the top of the foot.

FootJoy claims that this is supposed to help the golfer feel more connected to the ground while also giving them greater power and support in their shot. When we tested this shoe, it was a seriously comfortable alternative compared to wearing a laced pair of golf trainers and felt like it gave us a great connection with the ground which made us feel more comfortable swinging through our shots with a lot of power.

Textured upper so difficult to clean

We love both the BOA and laced versions of this shoe, we included it in our guide on the best golf shoes for walking (opens in new tab) because underfoot it feels incredibly soft and during our testing it performed at such a high level over some long days at the golf course. There is more than enough grip too thanks to the seven strategically placed cleats.

As far as which model to go for, this is all about personal preference. The Wrapid fastening system in the BOA gives an excellent fit but so does the laced option for those who want more of a traditional look. Finally the looks are very modern and almost trainer-like which we definitely are a fan of. The colors FootJoy have gone for are very good too.

I can see how after a round in really mucky conditions the lighter colours would become more dull in colour

A sporty, high-performance golf shoe, the 2022 Flex XP delivers excellent comfort over 18 holes of golf. We were big fans of FootJoy's previous Flex model (opens in new tab) but the 2022 shoe is an excellent upgrade on what is a fantastic summer golf shoe and will add an extra spring to your step. They feel like a running trainer more than a golf shoe but offer the same levels of traction as some of the very best women's golf shoes (opens in new tab)

They are a lightweight, yet waterproof offering, that offer great breathability thanks to the specially designed mesh that aligns the shoe's upper. While you might think that this mesh is not the best for rainy or dusty conditions, we were impressed with how easy it was to brush mud and sand off them. But it was the comfort levels of these shoes that really was a game changer for us.

The sole is so well cushioned and features an EVA midsole that helps to stabilize the foot and give more support as you swing the club. Even in wet conditions, we thought these shoes held their own. But we also loved how comfortable we felt wearing them shoes both on and off the course. Plus they also come with a one-year waterproof warranty, which is a great insurance to have if you regularly play in wet conditions.

FootJoy Womens Links Shoes

A very versatile shoe that can be worn on the course

Specifications

Sizes: 3-9
Colors: 3 (Black; White and Turqoise; White)

Reasons to buy

+
The tennis pump appearance really wins it
+
The Links can be worn on and off the course making it a great 2-in-1 shoe
+
They are so fashionable.
+
High in the comfort stakes and performance was great too

Reasons to avoid

-
More colour choices would be great
-
The laces came undone at times so had to give it a double knot

A stylish golf shoe that we received many compliments on both on and off the course, the FootJoy Women's Links Golf Shoes are a fantastic golf shoe that delivers excellent comfort and high performance. FootJoy are really starting to make a name for itself in the golf shoe industry for the less traditional options it have in their line up and these summer golf shoes are a testament to that. They are a fantastic spikeless golf shoe (opens in new tab) and are made from a plush leather that is very easy to clean. We tested them in both wet and dry conditions and our feet remained dry and comfortable throughout.

The sole delivers excellent grip on the turf and while that perhaps might not be the same traction as some of the best spiked golf shoes (opens in new tab) on the market, it did allow us to plant ourselves nicely and get a good swing through the shot. Your feet will also be well cushioned by this shoe too, which features FootJoy's lightweight PU footbed that gives great support to your heel and the balls of your feet. But most of all, we loved how versatile these casual golf shoes (opens in new tab) were, offering style on the course and on the high-street.

Not as versatile off the course

The FootJoy Women's 2022 Pro/SL Shoe is definitely worth considering if you're looking for a shoe that will provide you with greater stability. They are a comfy and spongy spikeless shoe that can be worn almost all year round thanks to their waterproof leather upper.

These shoes give excellent grip on the turf and thanks to the shoe's new Infinity Outsole which provides 30 per cent more points of traction than its predecessor. Its bouncy Stratofoam midsole cushioning sole also gives excellent support as you traverse the fairways and comes in an array of widths and sizes that make it perfect for golfers of all foot shapes.

But it is the weight of the shoe that really impressed us, and while it may look slightly big compared to some of the lighter sneakers on offer in our best women's spikeless shoe guide (opens in new tab), the Women's Pro/SL shoes are so light that it felt like we weren't wearing anything on our feet. Perhaps the coolest feature about these shoes are the customization options available on FootJoy's MyJoy platform. If the SL's colorways aren't to your tastes, you can use the MyJoy design tool to alter the color of the shoes to make them truly reflect your style.

The FootJoy Women's Fuel shoes are designed to help improve your distances off the tee. Using their special Power Stabiliser outsoles, the shoes improve your foot's traction with the turf and your stability in your golf swing, giving you a more controlled feel over the golf ball.

The shoe feels well supported and grounded thanks to it's synthetic leather upper, which was complemented well by the soft foam insoles that felt soft and sporty as you walk. They are also a very trendy show that comes in three different colors (white, navy and gray) and is super easy to clean after a muddy round on the golf course.

How we test golf shoes

Our golf shoe testing methodology (opens in new tab) revolves around putting models to the test over a number of rounds and in different conditions. This is so we can gain a better idea of overall performance in terms of factors like grip comfort, grip, stability, waterproofing and how they actually look on the golf course. Each of the shoes listed above has been personally used by a member of the Golf Monthly team and golf shoe testing is headed up by Golf Monthly Staff Writer Dan Parker.

This is the best way of testing a golf shoe as using it in the real world over a number of weeks allows us to see how they perform when variables change like weather, ground conditions, different stances and lies, and so on. We think this also gives us information on the little details as well like which brands come up small or large, which models start to rub a bit too much after 36 holes, which designs can be used off the golf course and for the drive home?  We are very comprehensive in our tests to the point where we will regularly attend product launches and meet with the manufacturer’s R&D experts to understand the new technology. That isn't to say manufacturers can buy a good review though, as all our reviews are made by golfers, for golfers.

What to consider when choosing a golf shoe

There are a number of factors to consider when picking out your next pair of golf shoes so to help you narrow down your search and inform your buying decision, below we have put together some key points.

1. Spiked or spikeless?

The models above are split into spiked (or cleated) and spikeless designs and there are pros and cons of each. Spiked golf shoes offer better grip and stability but don't sit as low to the ground as spikeless models. They are perhaps better suited to wet weather and colder climates where the terrain may be slightly slippery under foot.

Spikeless golf shoes offer off-course versatility. They are perfect for driving in the car to the golf course, playing a round, and then driving home again because they are usually light and comfortable, but most won't offer as much traction as a spiked shoe. Spikeless shoes are perhaps better for warmer climates where the ground is a lot harder. While they don't provide as much grip as a spiked shoe, on firmer ground you will get a lot of traction off the floor with spikeless golf shoes.

2. Waterproofing

If you live somewhere that gets a lot of rain then a waterproof shoe is a must. The best designs will keep your feet bone dry however if you play golf in glorious sunshine most of the time, then you may view other factors as more significant.

Many players choose to have one pair for winter and another, lighter pair for summer to keep them fresh and suit different requirements.

You may also want to think about how easy to clean your waterproof shoes are. Some shoes can be made of a waterproof fabric that can sometimes get dirty with mud and be hard to clean. But if you play a lot in the summer months, then a lighter more breathable pair of shoes might be for you.

3. Getting the right fit

When picking out golf shoes getting the right fit is important because otherwise blisters can build up, or your feet may slide around inside, which limits your stability.

When trying a pair on for the first time, listen for the 'whoosh' sound when you slide your feet in - that's the sound of all the air leaving the shoe to confirm it is the correct size, but do a walking test to be sure. They shouldn't pinch anywhere, nor should your feet be moving around inside.

When it comes to the right fit it is also worth considering different laces. Normal laces are good for most but for some golfers, BOA laced shoes provide more convenient fastening and shouldn’t loosen during the course of a round, but are usually a tad more expensive.

The better fit, the more control you'll have in your swing and that means you'll be more confident when it comes to putting more power on your golf shots.

4. Styling

Thankfully modern golf shoe design has seen many brands not just create traditional, classic-looking shoes, but also modern styles that can be used off the golf course too. Therefore it is important to think about what your shoes look like and what style suits you. Whatever you like or dislike, there is something for everyone these days.

5. Support

Over a round of 18 holes, an average golfer will walk approximately five miles and burn up to 2,000 calories. That is a lot of time spent on your feet, so as it goes without saying, you're going to always want to have something on your feet that is comfortable.

If you do get sore feet or knees during your round, it's best to get a shoe that has a spongey yet supple sole that can cushion your feet while you walk. That being said some shoes can often sacrifice performance for comfort, so it's best to always try your shoes on and have a little walk around your club shop before you buy.

You may also want to think about the support you get around the ankles as many golfers traversing the undulating terrains of their local club will know that it is often very easy to turn over on one of your ankles if you misplace your step. For that reason, if you can get a pair of shoes with good support around their opening, your ankles will be much better off for it.

If you enjoyed this guide on the best FootJoy golf shoes, be sure to check out the Golf Monthly website for more reviews and guides, such as the best Nike golf shoes, or best adidas golf shoes.

Is FootJoy a good brand?

FootJoy are highly regarded as being one of the premium footwear brands in golf, with PGA Tour professionals, like Tiger Woods, Justin Thomas, Patrick Cantlay, Louis Oosthuizen and Adam Scott all choosing to use FootJoy.

Does Tiger Woods wear FootJoy golf shoes?

While Tiger Woods has previously played in Nike golf shoes, in recent years, the 15-time major winner has been seen wearing a pair of FootJoy's Premiere Series Packard golf shoes.

Is it better to wear spiked or spikeless golf shoes?

That depends on your preferences as a golfer. Spiked golf shoes offer more grip on the ground and help players perform on softer surfaces, where the turf might be slippy. Spikeless golf shoes are better for summer conditions when the ground may be a little harder and are regularly seen being used by professional PGA Tour players in America.
