Ryder Cup - Final Team Selections

Following on from the announcement of the USA Team two weeks ago, Bernard Langer announced his two selections to join the ten qualifiers for the European Team. His captain's picks were Colin Montgomerie (no surprise there!) and Englishman Luke Donald, who plays most of his golf in America on the PGA Tour but recently rejoined the European Tour to make himself available for selection. Among the other players under consideration by Langer were Fredrik Jacobson and Alex Cejka, who are also more often seen in the States.

Jacobson just missed out by one place in the World Points list qualification last week and was again one place out of automatic qualification this week. He had a chance to secure an automatic place by finishing fourth at the BMW International Open but could only managed tied sixth place. Ian Poulter nearly lost his spot on the team when he took a quadruple-bogey on the 10th hole on Sunday but picked up six shots in the last eight holes, including an eagle on the 18th, to secure his place on the team.

Cejka finished tied for third place in Munich but was too far out of the running to make qualification. However, his recent form has been excellent including tied ninth at last week's World Golf Championships NEC Invitational and second at the INTERNATIONAL a couple of weeks earlier. Perhaps Langer feared that his friendship with his countryman may have been cited as a contributing factor, had he chosen Cejka over Donald.

All three had a case to make for inclusion but Langer acknowledged that he gave weight to Donald's experience in the Walker Cup, which is the bi-annual amateur team match play competition between USA and GB & Ireland, where he won seven of his eight matches during his team's victories in 1999 and 2001.

This week and for the next couple of weeks while I am on my vacation (I'll be back in time for the Ryder Cup), I shall only be writing my editorial article instead of individual reports on each of the tournaments. I shall still be publishing the top ten results, money lists and world rankings as well a new "Off the Cart Path" cartoon strip each week.

That's all for now. Have a great week, on and off the course.
