  • Born in the aftermath of the 2011 earthquake that struck the Pacific coast of Tōhoku, Japan, Cav Empt (short for “caveat emptor,” a legal term derived from Latin meaning “buyer beware”) is a collaboration between former XL Recordings A&R Toby Feltwell, graphic designer Sk8thing and Hishiyama “Hishi” Yutaka. Not long after NIGO and Pharrell relinquished control of their brand Billionaire Boys Club, Feltwell reached out to Sk8thing and Hishi to propose launching a new brand. Inspired by the Philip K. Dick novel Ubik, from which Cav Empt takes its name, the trio have positioned their label as a reaction to the “dissatisfaction with the present state of things…refusing to believe that the reality we assumed we were experiencing was really real, and perhaps we could just find an alternative somehow.” With a rebellious attitude and Sk8thing’s distinct glitch-style graphics that often pose questions about chronology and consumerism, Cav Empt has quickly grown a cult following.
